In June of this year I was asked to join the Soldiers’ Angels Board of Advisors. Later, in October, MMA Fighter and Special Forces Sniper Tim Kennedy officially accepted the role of Soldiers’ Angels’ Spokesperson. Silver Star recipient and Marine Captain Brian Stann runs the organization Hire Heroes and is one of Tim’s closest friends. I think we all know that summing up those three facts can only lead us to one glorious conclusion:
It’s time for everyone to grow a luxurious mustache.
From now until the MMA fight on 10 December 2011, we’re asking every MMA fighter, celebrity, or organization that wants to make a fundamental difference in the lives of our men and women serving abroad to “Mustache Up” and sign up for a team. Your team can be as many or as few people as you want. We’ll post anything you want about yourself and your team. We’ll link your page, your sponsors, anything. What we ask of you is that you get the word out and ask your fans and friends to donate to your team via this website.
Our dream is that on 10 December when Jon Bones Jones faces Lyoto Machida, the cage is full of fantastic facial hair, showcasing amazing support for our men and women in uniform.
All donations are tax deductible and will go through Soldiers’ Angels accounts.
What do you get for leading a team?
The winning team gets 5% of the total donated amount to all teams donated to the charity of their choice, and a giant metal cold steel trophy engraved with your name.
The second place team gets 3% of the total donated amount donated to the charity of their choice and a somewhat less giant cold steel trophy engraved with your name.
The third place team gets 2% of the total donated amount donated to the charity of their choice and a slightly smaller cold steel trophy than the second place one engraved with your name.
The rest of the funds will be separated with 75% going to Soldiers’ Angels and 25% going to Hire Heroes.
But what about my magnificent stache?
We’re also going to have a fan vote in the last week to determine which team has developed the best collection of mustaches. This is a winner-take-all BEST IN SHOW event and the team will receive an amazing mustache sculpture engraved with their names.
But mustaches are soooo 1970s…
1) 0.45% of our population has sacrificed years of their lives overseas in harsh conditions, away from family and friends. Many troops come back with injuries, trauma, and severe anxiety. They have sacrificed a ton for us and continue to do so. Please consider sacrificing just a little space between your nose and mouth and let them know you do care. Use those Twitter accounts and Facebook pages to ask your fans to support our troops.
2) If the first point means little to you, just remember that you still get to ask people if they want a mustache ride.
